Board's attorney.

The retirement board shall be authorized to employ the services of such attorney as it deems appropriate to represent the interests of the retirement fund and to pay as compensation for the services an amount to be approved from by the retirement board. It shall be the duty of the board's attorney to give such advice to the board in all matters pertaining to the duties of the retirement board and the management of the fund whenever he or she is requested to do so; and the board shall be authorized to hire the services of such attorney to represent and defend the retirement board as it deems necessary as its attorney in all civil actions that may be brought against it.
