Funeral benefits, amount--lump-sum payment to surviving spouse,when.

86.1620. 1. (1) Upon the death after August 28, 2003, of a memberin service, or upon the death of a member who was in service on or afterAugust 28, 2003, and who dies after having been retired and pensioned,there shall be paid, in addition to all other benefits, a funeral benefitof one thousand dollars to the person or entity who provided or paid forthe funeral services for such member.

(2) Any member who was retired on or before August 28, 2003, and isreceiving retirement benefits from the retirement system, upon applicationto the retirement board, shall be appointed by the retirement board as aconsultant for the remainder of such member's life. Upon the death of suchmember, there shall be paid, in addition to all other benefits, a funeralbenefit of one thousand dollars to the person or entity who provided orpaid for the funeral services for such member.

2. If no benefits are otherwise payable to a surviving spouse of adeceased member, the member's accumulated contributions, to any extent notfully paid to such member prior to the member's death or to the survivingspouse of such member, shall be paid in one lump sum to the member's namedbeneficiary or, if none, to the member's estate, and such payment shallconstitute full and final payment of any and all claims for benefits underthe retirement system.
