217.255. 1. The division shall adopt rules and regulations forestablishing in each of the correctional centers a system of compensationto the offenders confined in the correctional centers, which shall providefor the compensation of each offender for work or services performed andfor satisfactory performance in academic or vocational education classesduring confinement.

2. The division shall prepare graduated wage schedules for payment ofcompensation to offenders.

3. Eight hours of work per day shall normally constitute a day oflabor for each offender unless there is an emergency situation or otherwiseapproved by the division director or the chief administrative officer.

4. The director shall have the authority to pay into the crimevictims' compensation fund from an offender's compensation or account, theamount owed by the offender to the crime victims' compensation fund,provided that the offender has failed to pay the amount owed to the fundprior to entering a department correctional center.

5. The department shall have the authority to remove from theoffender's compensation or account such sums as may be deemed reasonableand proper as restitution for the offender's willful or malicious damage ordestruction of state property.

6. Offenders shall only receive compensation for work performed whichhas been approved by the director or the chief administrative officer ofthe correctional center at which the offender is assigned. Anycompensation received for unapproved work may be confiscated and creditedto the crime victims' compensation fund.
