Supervision required by anesthesiologist, limitations--writtenpractice protocol required.

334.424. 1. An anesthesiologist assistant shall practice only underthe direct supervision of an anesthesiologist who is physically present orimmediately available. A supervising anesthesiologist shall be allowed tosupervise up to four anesthesiologist assistants consistent with federalrules or regulations for reimbursement for anesthesia services.

2. Each anesthesiologist who agrees to act as the supervisinganesthesiologist of an anesthesiologist assistant shall adopt a writtenpractice protocol that is consistent with sections 334.400 to 334.430 anddelineates the services that the anesthesiologist assistant is authorizedto provide and the manner in which the anesthesiologist will supervise theanesthesiologist assistant. The provisions of the protocol shall be basedon relevant quality assurance standards, including regular review by thesupervising anesthesiologist of the medical records of the patients caredfor by the anesthesiologist assistant.

3. The supervising anesthesiologist shall oversee theanesthesiologist assistant in accordance with the terms of the protocol andany rules and regulations as defined by the board for the supervision of ananesthesiologist assistant. The board may randomly audit or inspect anywritten practice protocol under which an anesthesiologist assistant works.
