Classes of crimes.

556.016. 1. An offense defined by this code or by any otherstatute of this state, for which a sentence of death orimprisonment is authorized, constitutes a "crime". Crimes areclassified as felonies and misdemeanors.

2. A crime is a "felony" if it is so designated or ifpersons convicted thereof may be sentenced to death orimprisonment for a term which is in excess of one year.

3. A crime is a "misdemeanor" if it is so designated or ifpersons convicted thereof may be sentenced to imprisonment for aterm of which the maximum is one year or less.
