Definitions.

600.011. The following words and phrases as used in thischapter have the following meanings, unless the context otherwiserequires:

(1) "Assigned counsel" means private attorneys who are hiredby the state public defender director to handle the cases ofeligible persons from time to time on a case basis;

(2) "Chief deputy director" means the attorney appointed bythe commission to assist the state public defender director andto exercise the duties and powers of the director in his absenceor upon his resignation;

(3) "Commission" means the public defender commission;

(4) "Defender(s)" includes both attorneys which serve asstaff attorneys in the state defender system and assigned counselwho provide defense services on a case basis, but does notinclude secretarial, investigative, social service, orparaprofessional staff;

(5) "Director" means the state public defender director;

(6) "Eligible person" means a person who falls within thefinancial rules for legal representation at public expenseprescribed by section 600.086;

(7) "State public defender system" means a system forproviding defense services to every jurisdiction within the stateby means of a centrally administered organization having afull-time staff.
