§ 357. Registers of probate; appointment and removal; compensation; clerks

(a) The probate judge shall appoint and remove registers of probate and clerical assistants for the probate courts, who shall be paid by the state and shall be state employees and shall be entitled to all fringe benefits and compensation accorded classified state employees who are similarly situated, as determined by the court administrator subject to any applicable statutory limits, unless otherwise covered by the provisions of a collective bargaining agreement setting forth the terms and conditions of employment, negotiated pursuant to chapter 28 of Title 3.

(b) Subject to the approval of the court administrator, more than one register of probate may be appointed in any probate district as the business of the court requires.
