§ 2.2-700. Department created; appointment of Commissioner; powers and duties.

A. There is created a Department for the Aging (the Department), which shallbe headed by a Commissioner appointed by the Governor to serve at hispleasure.

B. The Commissioner of the Department shall, under the direction and controlof the Governor, exercise the powers and perform the duties conferred orimposed upon him by law and perform such other duties as may be required bythe Governor.

C. In cooperation with the Commonwealth Council on Aging, the Commissionershall serve as the Governor's principal advisor on aging issues, andrecommend to the Governor and the General Assembly such policies,legislation, and other actions appropriate to meet the needs of an agingsociety and to improve aging services in the Commonwealth. In addition, theCommissioner shall serve as special assistant to the Governor for AgingPolicy and shall report directly to the Governor as necessary on agingpolicies.
