§ 54.1-2957. Licensure of nurse practitioners.

A. The Board of Medicine and the Board of Nursing shall jointly prescribe theregulations governing the licensure of nurse practitioners. It shall beunlawful for a person to practice as a nurse practitioner in thisCommonwealth unless he holds such a joint license.

B. The Board of Medicine and the Board of Nursing shall jointly promulgateregulations specifying collaboration and consultation among physicians andcertified nurse midwives that shall include the development of, and periodicreview and revision of, a written protocol; guidelines for availability andongoing communications that define consultation among the collaboratingparties and the patient; and periodic joint evaluation of the servicesdelivered.

C. The Boards may issue a license by endorsement to an applicant to practiceas a nurse practitioner if the applicant has been licensed as a nursepractitioner under the laws of another state and, in the opinion of theBoards, the applicant meets the qualifications for licensure required ofnurse practitioners in this Commonwealth.

Pending the outcome of the next National Specialty Examination, the Boardsmay jointly grant temporary licensure to nurse practitioners.
