Optimizing a website may involve editing the actual content and HTML on the website to obtain the placement or value within a search result. SEO achieves this goal through the relevance of specific keywords and through the removal of barriers to the indexing activities of specific search engines. SEO also optimizes a website or web page by increasing the number of inbound links or backlinks within the site.

Leading search engines use crawlers to find webpages based on their algorithmic search results. SEO techniques aim to increase a page’s prominence through the establishment of an index and by preventing undesirable content in various search indexes.
